The Oulu Art Museum's exhibition programme focuses on regionalism and contemporary art, not forgetting collection and thematic exhibitions and internationalism. The exhibitions are accompanied by a rich programme of events.

The Oulu Art Museum's collection has focused on contemporary art. The thematic groups include different phenomena of visual art, artists' self-portraits, naive art and Nordic art. The Oulu Art Museum also maintains the collection of the City of Oulu and manages several smaller donation collections.
